Why 30 Litre Casks?

There’s a logical explanation as to why Mackmyra’s much loved 30-litre casks are the size they are. During the distillation process we carefully separate the “heart” of the distillate, which is the usable portion. Our first self-produced copper pot-stills could hold 100 litres of weak spirit, which produced a “heart” of pretty much exactly 30 litres following distillation. So as a result of the volume produced during distillation, the first 30-litre cask was created in the year 2000.

Another major benefit associated with the small casks is that the contact area of the oak in relation to volume is larger than is traditionally the case, which allows the whisky to mature more quickly and intensively.

Cask Recipes Explained

Elegant

Mackmyra’s elegant recipe is characterised by the following groups of flavours: fruity, with notes of citrus and pear. Spiciness with notes of aniseed, ginger, cinnamon and cardamom. Herbs, with notes of tobacco leaves, grass and pepper, as well as nutty, with notes of almond. The elegant recipe is the perfect choice for those looking to fully release the oakiness of the cask.

Smoke

Mackmyra is one of the few distilleries in the world which self-produces its smoky distillate. Both malting and smoking take place in a facility situated close to the distillery using Swedish-grown barley and peat drawn from the nearby Karinmossen (Karin bog). And to add a further Swedish dimension to the smoky flavour, the glowing peat is seasoned with brittle juniper twigs.

Pre-Stored Elegant

This Elegant recipe is also available as Pre-matured Elegant, which means the distillate has been aged in a 200-litre ex-Bourbon cask for four years. Choosing this recipe enables you to enhance your final whisky, producing the fruity character from two different casks. The recipe is also perfect for those who want a shorter waiting period before bottling.

Extra Smoke

If you’re looking for a little more kick in the smoky flavour, check out the Extra Smoke recipe. This features a 50/50 ratio between smoky and elegant malt, resulting in a robustly smoky whisky. Consider combining this recipe with an Oloroso cask for and even more complex finish. Please note, this recipe option is extremely limited and only available at certain times of the year.

Cask Wood Types Explained

Bourbon

Bourbon is the traditional type of cask to mature single malt whisky. The casks are brought in from the USA where they were earlier used to mature Bourbon. The classic American white oak imbues your whisky with sweet aromas and a rich amber colour. It also gives your whisky a soft round flavour with notes of vanilla, pear, apple, citrus, caramel and honey.

Oloroso (Sherry)

The Oloroso cask is made out of american oak and then saturated with Oloroso wine to give notes of raisin, dried fruit, wine, dark chocolate and grapes. The characteristics of the cask makes for a sweet, round and mellow flavour and a beautiful dark red colour to the liquid.

New American Oak

Whisky matured at new American oak casks gives a complex and rich equation with clear vanilla and toffee notes. The fresh oak makes the whisky develop to an powerful and round taste where the balance between the sweetness and spiciness creates a fantastic interaction. The whisky turns dark amber.

Anniversary Cask

In order to mark 20 years as a Swedish whisky producer, we’ve produced an innovative Anniversary Cask. Over the years, we’ve learned that whisky casks with staves of American oak and heads in new Swedish oak create a perfect fusion of flavour. The Swedish oak is much loved for its spicy notes of black pepper, cardamom and nutmeg, as well as its toffee-like sweetness and almond notes. In combination with the notes of vanilla, toffee and honey in the American oak, it’s no surprise that casks combining different oaks have become so popular.

Portwine Finish

We are constantly looking for new, interesting and tasty collaborations for our whisky and this is a Gravity cask in a whole new vintage. At the end of 2017 we went down to Portugal, and started an exciting collaboration with Quinta Do Vallado, and now a new batch of 30-litre casks have arrived in our whisky mine.
Seasoned for three months with their port before being returned to Mackmyra, expect a whisky with a fruity sweetness, blackberries, blackcurrants, dried fruits, plums, figs and raisins. If you're feeling adventurous, how about combining with the Smoke recipe for a dark-fruit, wood-smoke combination?

Locations Explained

Mackmyra Whisky Village

Together with the first cask owners we started building the Forest warehouse in the summer of 2009, which opened the year after when the first casks from the Ambassador campaign moved in. The Forest warehouse lies in the woods next to our Gravity distillery and is the recommended choice if you're looking to fill your cask in person, or visit the cask in the future.

Bodås Mine

In the south of Gästrikland is our largest and oldest whisky warehouse located, surrounded by a mighty forest. In here, the whisky is securely matured, 50 meters below ground in the mountain. Originally built to extract ore, the space is now given to a more precious product. With such a unique location, this warehouse is perfect for those looking to add an extra level of interest to their cask's story.
